Bio

Given the name KaNikki, being interpreted as “great writer” at birth, KaNikki is living up to her name. With over twenty years of writing and eight years on the poetry scene, KaNikki Jakarta has shared the stage with Jill Scott, Raheem DeVaughn, and Lyfe Jennings. As a result, KaNikki’s spoken word performances are sought after by poetry fans all over the country. She was the winner of Michael Baidsen’s poetry contest with a poem entitled Dreamed Reality, KaNikki’s voice has been heard on radio waves of 96.3fm 95.5fm, 96blx fm, Interfaith Voices, 97.5fm and a host of other radio and internet radio shows.

KaNikki J. writes and recites what she calls “real life fiction” that touches her listeners to the core. She says the things that people are afraid to say and encourages truth in her lyrics. Her first spoken word cd is an introduction to the voice that men and women pull inspiration from. The cd, entitled Introducing KaNikki J. sold hundreds of units three days before the said release date of Mother’s Day 2008 and is currently available on her publisher’s website www.greatpublishing.com. Poetry fans favorite poems: Fall Awake and Milk Drinking are currently playing on this page and are tracks on the cd. Your favorite poet and author; may become your favorite emcee as she has a 16 bar featured tracked entitled Alabama Represent dedicated to her home state.

Past performances landed KaNikki in a lead actress role as a rape victim in an independent filmed entitled PLAYED OUT written by Kim Bey. This film influenced KaNikki to address the reality of rape and living with HIV/AIDS in her writings. Although a successful experience, KaNikki has not sought out to lead in any other acting role. She expressed that after “playing” a rape victim, she couldn’t shake the feeling of “victim”. Instead, KaNikki took those experiences and wrote what is now an international best selling novel entitled IN REAL LIFE followed by the sequel recently released entitled THE COLOR BLUE. Take time to view her author’s page for excerpts of the novels: www.myspace.com/kanikkij

After leaving Corporate America in September 2006 to pursue her spoken word and author career, this Alabama State Alumni is currently working on a full length cd, the next novel to be included in her five book “real life series” and a poetry collection to be illustrated by Bobbie Brient Jr. Her first poetry chapbook KANIKKI WHO? and first poetry collection THE SKILLZ OF A SISTAH illustrated by Bobbie Brient Jr. is currently out of print.
